They say that you are what you eat. That is true in life, and it is true at the Lord’s Supper table. Here at this table you are what you eat in two senses.
You are what you eat because when you take up the bread and the wine, by faith you are taking up the body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. And as you partake of Him by faith, you grow to be more like Him. Likeness to Christ is the essence of your sanctification. So become like God by looking to Christ, seeing by the eyes of faith an all-sufficient Savior, and receiving Him so that you can be strong to be like Him. You are sons of the Most High God, like the only begotten Son of God as you eat His body and drink His blood.
You are what you eat also because you are the body of Christ, and as you take up this one loaf of bread and this one cup of wine, you are actually being knit together as one body, united in Christ, united in love, united in humility and forgiveness and tender mercies. You are the body of Christ as you eat the body of Christ.
So I say to all of you who are baptized into His church and trusting in Him alone for salvation – come and eat, come and drink. Come and receive God’s gift for your souls. Come and let us be lifted up into heaven to receive grace from our Savior, for He was crucified, and He died, and He rose again, and He ever lives and intercedes for us.
Come, let us taste and see that the Lord is good.
