People go to church for a lot of different reasons, a lot of good reasons and a lot of really bad reasons – everything from crass, fleshly motives like searching for clients or cruising for chicks to coming to get an emotional pick-me-up for another week of doing my best to earn God’s smile or pad a comfortable life.
Why are you here to worship today?
In the most ultimate sense you are here because God preordained that you would be here. If God is sovereign, then He certainly determined that I would be standing before you today telling you that He is sovereign. We are here by divine design.
But in another sense you are here in obedience to our Lord’s commands. We are gathering to worship because He told us to, and it is our nature as children of the King to hearken when we hear the call to worship from our great King’s own lips.
But in still another sense you are here, I pray, because it is your delight and joy and satisfaction. We are worshipers, and we find delight in acknowledging and reverencing and adoring and magnifying the greatness and goodness of the Triune God. Christ is the satisfaction of our souls. He is the fatness that fills us. He is our life and our bread and our water, and we crave Him and His glory like a man lost in the trackless desert craves the first drops of moisture on the tongue.
The Psalmist said, “How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.” (Psalm 36:7-9) We who are in Christ Jesus are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of His house. That is why we are here.
So glut yourself on the gracious Lordship and precious glory of your God. Find delight and pleasure and joy in Him. To delight in the treasure of your soul is to obey God, and it is to come near to Him and enjoy Him for who He is.
Our Triune God calls and we answer. Let us glorify Him together.
